Vacation Reading Program Starts in June!

Slogan 2This summer, be a gold medal reader and join our Vacation Reading Program 2016! Beginning June 1st and continuing through July 30th, all ages – birth through adults – can sign up to read for prizes and enjoy six free shows and programs at the Dawson and Lumpkin libraries.

Infant through fifth grade readers can read to win prizes including tickets for four to North Georgia Zoo and Petting Farm at the Lumpkin County Public Library, and a Stars and Strikes bowling pizza party for six at the Dawson County Public Library. Readers getting ready to enter sixth grade through senior year can read to win an Apple iPad mini at both libraries, as well as gift cards.

In addition to prizes, enjoy six FREE performances throughout the summer including magician extraordinaire, Arthur Atsma, and a drumming circle with UGA percussion professor Dr. Arvin Scott. Teens can enjoy six FREE programs including Teen Yoga, Zombie Olympics, and Chocolate Games. But the fun doesn’t end there! Adults can read to win an Apple iPad mini, too! And this year, readers of all ages will have the chance to win the System-Wide Grand Prize of a horseback riding trip for four at Gold City Corral and Carriage Company, as well as a gift card to Ruby Tuesday and goodies from Amicalola Falls State Park.

Reading over the summer is vital for children and teens, so they don’t lose the great skills they’ve cultivated over the school year. Vacation Reading Program is an annual FREE program at both Dawson and Lumpkin libraries, serving all members of the community, and is made possible through the generosity of the Friends of the Dawson County Public Library and Friends of the Lumpkin County Public Library, as well as the following wonderful community prize donors: Gold City Corral and Carriage Company, Ruby Tuesday, Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge, North Georgia Zoo and Petting Farm, Gustavo’s Pizzeria, Stars and Strikes, INK – Interactive Neighborhood for Kids, Jumping Jack’s, Consolidated Goldmine, Pizza Hut, Old Towne Pizza, Zaxby’s, Culver’s, Appalachian Outfitters, Let’s Roll, Catch Air, The Ice, Wendy’s, and Dunkin’ Donuts.
Join us for great summer fun at your library!

Dahlonega Rotary Grant

LC Rotary LaptopsThanks to the Noon Dahlonega Rotary Club and the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary Club, the Lumpkin County Library is pleased to announce some new technological additions that are now up and running at the library. The Noon and Sunrise Rotary clubs, along with a matching grant from the Georgia Rotary District 6910, recently donated $ 6,000.00 to the Lumpkin County Library for technology enhancements. With this grant, the library purchased seven new laptop computers, a portable large sheet scanner, and an upgraded wireless WiFi router for the library. The addition of the new laptops is a welcome addition for patrons that use the library for internet access. The new wireless WiFi router has provided an enhanced wireless signal and allows patrons to access the wireless network even when the library is not open. Patrons can now enjoy the library reading garden, sit outside on the bench as they work on their laptops, or even stay in their cars and use their computers. The portable large sheet scanner will be used for digitization of the library’s genealogy and Georgia History resources that currently only exist in hard copy format. Chestatee Regional Library System would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for all the organization, research, and generosity that helped to make this grant a possibility. It is through support like this from the Dahlonega Rotary Clubs which enables the library to fulfill its vital role in our community.
