1,000 Books B4 Kindergarten is a new library partnership program with Georgia Public Library Services that encourages all Lumpkin & Dawson County families to read 1,000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. Studies have shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth help to strengthen their language skills and build their vocabulary, important tools for learning to read when they enter kindergarten. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Dolly Parton launched her Imagination Library in 1995. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among preschool children and their families by mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes each month. She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create.
Lumpkin Literacy and Dawson County Wee Books both completely fund a free book through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library each month for the Lumpkin County and Dawson County children (ages birth through 4 years). Kids run to the mailbox each month to get their free book. Bring families closer together by reading the books to your children!

eRead Kids
Build confidence, improve reading skills, and have fun with eRead Kids, a digital library available through all public libraries in Georgia.
This free collection of ebooks and audio books is for kids pre-K through fourth grade. It’s a mix of fiction and non-fiction titles that can be downloaded onto computers, tablets, and smartphones, giving young readers access to over 15,000 books.

1000 Books B4 Kindergarten
- Stop by the Youth Services desk at your local library to pick up your first reading log, or download the app available for Android or iPhone.
- Track your reading. Each time you read a book with your child, fill in a circle on the reading log.
- Drop by either library to have your reading log checked. You’ll receive a small prize and have your books counted toward the 1000 books goal!
No, the program begins for your family on the day you register, and you only count books you read after registering.
You count the book every time you read it. If you read the same book 10 times, you count it ten times.
Yes, any book that is read to your child counts.
No, every book you read counts, whether it’s a library book, your own book, a friend’s book, etc.
As long as your child listens to the whole book, it counts!
